Sword Art Online is an anime series that follows protagonist Kazuto "Kirito" Kirigaya and his friend Asuna as they are trapped in a virtual reality video game called "Sword Art Online". They must beat the game to escape, but are told that the only way to do so is by beating all 100 floors of the game. The story explores both Kirito's and Asuna's personal lives, their struggles in both worlds, relationships developed with other players within SAO, and insight into how games affect people. If they fail, they die in the real world. The series is directed by Tomohiko Ito and produced by A-1 Pictures, and was broadcast on Asahi Broadcasting Corporation's anime television network Asansō Broadcasting Network (ABN). The series is written by Reki Kawahara and Noboru Sugimura, with original character design by Masashi Kubo. The original manga was written and illustrated by Reki Kawahara. Sword Art Online is licensed for an English language release in North America by Aniplex of America and Manga Entertainment and the series has been dubbed in both English and French. The first anime television series, Sword Art Online: Infinity Moment, was created by A-1 Pictures and aired in Japan between July and December 2012. The anime was streamed on Daisuki and Niconico. The series was released on Blu-ray and DVD with English subtitles by Aniplex of America on March 9, 2013. The second season, Sword Art Online II: CoLucy, started airing April 7, 2014. It is also streamed on Daisuki and Niconico. The third season was announced in fall 2013 as Sword Art Online: Extra Edition which aired from November 2013 to February 2014. It consists of only an OVA. The fourth season, Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale, is a sequel to the second season and was released in February 2017. The fifth season, Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online, began airing in April 2018. The first anime adaptation has been well received in Japan and abroad, where it won several awards for Best Action Animation and was nominated for the 2012 Anime Award for Best TV Anime. Sword Art Online has also received commercial success comparable to that of other anime adaptations of popular series, with the blu-ray boxset selling 519,000 copies in Japan as of September 2013. The anime also led to other merchandise such as a video game and light novels continuing the story from the original work. The first season of "Sword Art Online" was produced by A-1 Pictures and aired in Japan between July 7, 2012 and December 22, 2012 on Tokyo MX, MBS, TVA, BS11 and Animax with later airings on ABC, CBC and GTV. The series was also aired on Animax Asia at a later date. The series has been licensed by Aniplex of America for release in North America.
